Dubai is India's most visited international destination — more Indians travel to UAE each year than to any other country, including the UK or USA. Whether it's a holiday, business trip, or layover turned extended stay, Indian travelers to Dubai need reliable, affordable data.
Here's the complete guide to staying connected in UAE.
Why Dubai eSIM is different
UAE has two carriers: Etisalat (now e&) and du. Both offer 5G coverage across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and most of the UAE. There's no "better" network — both are excellent.
What's unique about UAE connectivity:
- VoIP restrictions: WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, and Skype audio/video calls are restricted in the UAE. This is official UAE telecom policy. You'll need a dedicated VoIP app like Etisalat's C'Me, or use du's Botim app.
- WhatsApp messaging (text/media) works fine — only audio/video calls are restricted
- Normal calls over the eSIM work — if you want to call home, dial the +91 number normally over eSIM (charged per minute) or use du's Botim
Trovio UAE eSIM pricing
| Plan | Trovio | Jio Roaming | Airalo (after forex) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days, 3 GB | ₹599 | ₹999 (capped) | ₹1,100 |
| 7 days, 5 GB | ₹999 | ₹2,499 | ₹1,800 |
| 14 days, 10 GB | ₹1,699 | Not available | ₹2,800 |
At ₹999 for 7 days, Trovio is 60% cheaper than Jio International roaming — with the same or better speeds (Trovio connects you to e& directly, not via Jio's roaming partner deal).
Dubai-specific data tips
Google Maps works — maps, navigation, and Street View all function normally in Dubai
Uber works — Uber operates in Dubai (Careem was acquired by Uber). Book rides normally.
Food delivery: Talabat is the main food delivery app in UAE (similar to Zomato). Works with any data connection.
Dubai Metro: Download the RTA app before landing for metro maps and timings. Very useful — the metro connects key tourist zones.
Data-heavy activities: Desert safari camps sometimes have weak signal in remote areas. Download offline maps of Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve before heading out.
Keeping your Indian number active
For Indian travelers to Dubai, the OTP situation is important:
Your Jio/Airtel SIM can receive SMS OTPs even in UAE — SMS doesn't require a data plan and works on any GSM network. Your Indian SIM will connect to a UAE carrier for SMS reception (incidental roaming, typically free for incoming SMS).
For calls: Enable WiFi Calling on your Indian number before departure. All calls to your Indian number route over the eSIM's data connection — free.
What about a UAE local SIM?
You can buy a du or Etisalat tourist SIM at Dubai airport (DXB, Terminal 1 and 3 have counters). The cost is approximately AED 55–100 (~₹1,200–2,200) for a tourist plan.
Downsides vs eSIM:
- Airport queues can be 30–45 minutes during peak hours
- You swap out your Indian SIM (miss OTPs unless you brought two phones)
- No pre-trip activation possible
For short trips (3–7 days), Trovio's eSIM at ₹999 is better value and more convenient.
Abu Dhabi day trip
If you're doing the Abu Dhabi day trip (Louvre, Sheikh Zayed Mosque), your Dubai eSIM works seamlessly — UAE is one country, one network.
Layovers at DXB
Dubai Airport offers free WiFi for all passengers, but it's throttled after a few hours. If you have a long layover and want reliable data for watching content or video calls, activate your Trovio UAE eSIM — even for a 6-hour layover, it's worth the ₹599 3-day plan.
